When she starts chatting with Tom, an aspiring writer who works at Bed Bath and Beyond, a genuine attraction begins to blossom. Through a world where cockroaches sing and dance and lonely people fumble desperately for connections, DEAD PEOPLE fuses together cinematic video design, dance and surrealism to tell an honest romantic comedy in our digitized society.

After a busy three years of making original shows, ETG is taking 2011 to focus on long-term development for a NEW 2012 project. More exciting info on that soon!

For now, we are seeking performers who are interested in collaborating with us for a long haul. (periodically throughout 2011) Send us a resume and pic at info@everywheretheatre.org. Video clips are a plus.

What We Are Looking For:

-dynamic performers who want to help create a collaborative project.

-drama-free artists who are in it because they want to make something special

-physical actors who like to jump around and do awesome things

-open minded peeps who are into experimenting with text that can be cut at any time (or tweaked to suit you as an individual)

What we aren’t looking for:

-wannabe celebrities

-those looking to get ahead in “the business” through this show (we have great audiences and occasionally great press, but making art is our first priority and being in this show will not help you book your next commercial)

-mean narcissists who get jealous easily

Also as usual, ETG is open for collaboration opps and gigs. Please contact us at info@everywheretheatre.org for inquiries.

The Internet

Will Fulton · August 13, 2010

So the Internet—kind of a big deal. Not since Gutenberg’s printing press has a new medium so rapidly and thoroughly changed the way our society functions. In the 20 years that the World Wide Web has existed, it has infiltrated virtually every aspect of our public and private lives, and shows no signs of slowing down. While the Large Hadron Collider may be the largest contiguous machine we have ever built, it pales in comparison to the Internet, which has grown at such an alarmingly high rate that it has outpaced our ability to map it, taking on unpredictable and almost organic qualities. Unless someone has kindly printed this review out for you, you are on it right now. The brave (or foolhardy) young artists of Everywhere Theatre Group have taken this enormous subject head-on in their aptly-titled ensemble-created piece, The Internet.

They accomplish this daunting task by reducing all of its complexities and abstractions to the deeply human elements at its core. The narratives that fill their cyberscape are familiar ones: stories of love, of loss, of misunderstandings, of loneliness. Rather than trying to include everything, directors Lindsay Mack and Leah Winkler wisely focus only on the social elements of the Internet, so we spend most of our time on well-worn sites like Gmail, OKCupid and Facebook. Beneath the slick interfaces this is a seething, vibrant world full of people longing to be seen and heard. Although the means may be new, the motives are as old as time. The universally strong cast creates this world with the deeply-felt conviction of those who inhabit it every day. They show the intimate understanding of the generation that has grown up alongside and inside it.

In form the piece mirrors its subject matter’s diversity by utilizing a pastiche of dance, movement, video, scenes, and songs. While certainly frenetic at times, the piece never loses focus, and all of these disparate elements flow together seamlessly to give the impression of a single, dynamic landscape. Mack and Winkler deftly manage our attention with smooth transitions of moments emerging from and receding back into the landscape. The balance between stillness and motion, extravagance and intimacy, is spot on. Teddy Nicholas’s lighting design very effectively supports this, savvily providing the shifting structure necessary to articulate this kind of virtual space. While Chase Voorhees’s sound design is similarly intelligent (I was incredibly pleased that the show began with the nostalgia-inducing sound of a dial-up modem), it’s his masterful video design that truly stands out. The swooping camera and its slight upward angle to the pages manages to make the seemingly mundane act of typing into a viable stage action.

As a word of warning, the Internet is full of porn, and accordingly this piece has its fair share of explicit content, both on video and on stage, but executed with pitch-perfect tastelessness. That being said, I would heartily recommend The Internet to anyone looking for a fun and insightful night of theatre. The ensemble has created a piece with equal parts love and skepticism that demonstrates the uniquely insightful position of the last generation to remember a time before the Internet changed everything. Everywhere Theatre Group has given us an affecting reminder that immense and abstract as it may be, at the end of the day the Internet is made of people.

Everywhere Theatre Group attempts to stage the World Wide Web in The Internet. Fusing dance, movement, video, music, original and found texts, ETG examines what lies beneath the cool, sleek surface of the information super highway. By asking what propels people into the shadowy underworld of the Web, where one desires to objectify bodies and see people fail, ETG aims to find the root of human connection at its newest form.

Everywhere Theatre Group is Leah Winkler, Chase Voorhees, Teddy Nicholas and Lindsay Mack. Since 2008, they have produced plays at Dixon Place (Untitled- A Play), The Ontological- Hysteric Incubator (Sintesi Dogpile Show, A Pale Horse, Death and Hell Followed With…), Wings Theater (Big Girls Club), The Brick Theater (Happy Dance Dance Princess Show!), HERE Arts Center (The Formula Play) and Bar on A (Way of the Word in collaboration with Republic Worldwide). They were 2008/2009 Resident Artists with the Ontological-Hysteric Incubator Short Form Series for the development of A Pale Horse, Death & Hell Followed With (A Lifetime Original Series), which received its world premiere in December 2009.

About Incubator Arts Project

The Incubator Arts Project supports independent, experimental performing artists through a series of programs aimed at offering production opportunities and guidance with long-term growth and artistic sustainability. Its programs primarily support world premieres of original work and also include a concert series, work in progress opportunities and artist salons and roundtables.

The Incubator Arts Project grew out of the Incubator, a project of the Ontological-Hysteric Theater. In 2010, the Ontological-Hysteric Theater announced that it would leave its permanent home, St. Mark’s Church, and that the Incubator would take over the space and operate year-round.

Beginning in 1993, the Ontological-Hysteric Theater, in addition to its primary support of the work of Richard Foreman, opened its doors to emerging, independent artists. Since 1993 the emerging artists program at the Ontological took many forms, including the Obie-winning Blueprint Series for emerging directors. In 2005, the OHT reorganized the programs under the name INCUBATOR, creating a series of linked programs to provide young theater artists with resources and support to develop process-oriented, original theatrical productions. By 2010, the program had quadrupled in size, involving a range of artists and increased support. The programs included the centerpiece Residency program for premieres, two annual music festivals, a regular concert series, a serial work-in-progress program called Short Form, and roundtables and salons aimed at keeping Incubator artists involved year-round. In May, 2010, the Incubator received an OBIE grant.
